– XCI – Amongst the proofs demonstrating the truth of this Revelation is this, that in every age and Dispensation, whenever the invisible Essence was revealed in the person of His Manifestation, certain souls, obscure and detached from all worldly entanglements, would seek illumination from the Sun of Prophethood and Moon of Divine guidance, and would attain unto the Divine Presence. For this reason, the divines of the age and those possessed of wealth, would scorn and scoff at these people. Even as He hath revealed concerning them that erred: “Then said the chiefs of His people who believed not, ‘We see in Thee but a man like ourselves; and we see not any who have followed Thee except our meanest ones of hasty judgment, nor see we any excellence in you above ourselves: nay, we deem you liars.’” (edit) And among the proofs for establishing this matter is that in every age and era in which the unseen Essence would appear in a human temple, some people who were unknown and had no attachment to the world nor any position would be illumined by the radiance of the Sun of Prophethood, guided by the lights of the Moon of Guidance, and would attain the meeting with God. Therefore it was for this reason that the divines of the age and the wealthy of the time would mock, as He says from the tongue of those misguided ones: “Then the chiefs who disbelieved among his people said: ‘We see you only as a man like ourselves, and we see that none follow you except those who are the lowest among us, of superficial judgment; and we do not see for you any superiority over us; rather we think you are liars.’” (edit)

They caviled at those holy Manifestations, and protested saying: “None hath followed you except the abject amongst us, those who are worthy of no attention.” Their aim was to show that no one amongst the learned, the wealthy, and the renowned believed in them. By this and similar proofs they sought to demonstrate the falsity of Him that speaketh naught but the truth. In this most resplendent Dispensation, however, this most mighty Sovereignty, a number of illumined divines, of men of consummate learning, of doctors of mature wisdom, have attained unto His Court, drunk the cup of His divine Presence, and been invested with the honor of His most excellent favor. They have renounced, for the sake of the Beloved, the world and all that is therein.… (edit) They would object and say to those holy Manifestations: “None have followed you except our lowest people, who are of no account.” By this they meant that the scholars, the wealthy, and the learned of the people had not believed in you, and by this and the like they would argue for the falsity of Him Who is the Truth. But in this Most Manifest Revelation and Great Sovereignty, a number of upright scholars, accomplished men of learning, and mature jurists were granted from the cup of nearness and reunion, attained through the greatest grace, and renounced the world of being and creation in the path of the Beloved... all of them (edit)

All these were guided by the light of the Sun of Divine Revelation, confessed and acknowledged His truth. Such was their faith, that most of them renounced their substance and kindred, and cleaved to the good pleasure of the All-Glorious. They laid down their lives for their Well-Beloved, and surrendered their all in His path. Their breasts were made targets for the darts of the enemy, and their heads adorned the spears of the infidel. No land remained which did not drink the blood of these embodiments of detachment, and no sword that did not bruise their necks. Their deeds, alone, testify to the truth of their words. (edit) They became guided, confessing and submissive before that Sun of Manifestation, in such a way that most gave up wealth and family, joined themselves to the good pleasure of the All-Glorious, rose up sacrificing their very lives for the Beloved, and spent all that they had been provided with, so that their breasts became the target of the arrows of the adversaries and their heads the adornment of the lances of the idolaters—such that there remained no land that did not drink of the blood of these sanctified souls, and no sword that was not wiped upon their necks. Their deeds are proof of the truth of their words. Is it not so? (edit)

Doth not the testimony of these holy souls, who have so gloriously risen to offer up their lives for their Beloved that the whole world marveled at the manner of their sacrifice, suffice the people of this day? Is it not sufficient witness against the faithlessness of those who for a trifle betrayed their faith, who bartered away immortality for that which perisheth, who gave up the Kawṯhar of the Divine Presence for salty springs, and whose one aim in life is to usurp the property of others? Even as thou dost witness how all of them have busied themselves with the vanities of the world, and have strayed far from Him Who is the Lord, the Most High. (edit) The testimony of those holy souls who, in this path, gave their lives for the sake of the Beloved—so that all the world was astonished at the sacrifice of their hearts and lives—is not sufficient for these servants as they are; and the denial of certain servants who sold the religion for a pittance and changed everlastingness into extinction, and exchanged the Kawthar of nearness for brackish springs, and seek no aim except the taking of people’s wealth—just as it is seen that all have become occupied with the adornments of the world and have remained far from the Most High Lord. Now be fair: is the testimony of these accepted and heard? (edit)

Be fair: Is the testimony of those acceptable and worthy of attention whose deeds agree with their words, whose outward behavior conforms with their inner life? The mind is bewildered at their deeds, and the soul marveleth at their fortitude and bodily endurance. Or is the testimony of these faithless souls who breathe naught but the breath of selfish desire, and who lie imprisoned in the cage of their idle fancies, acceptable? Like the bats of darkness, they lift not their heads from their couch except to pursue the transient things of the world, and find no rest by night except as they labor to advance the aims of their sordid life. Immersed in their selfish schemes, they are oblivious of the Divine decree. (edit) Whose word and deed are in agreement, whose outward and inward are in harmony, such that minds are bewildered at their actions and souls are confounded at their endurance and at what their bodies have borne; and the testimony of these heedless ones, who produce nothing but the desire of the self, have found no deliverance from the cage of false suppositions, and in the daytime do not raise their heads from the bed save that, like a dark bat, they strive in pursuit of the perishing world, and at night find no rest save that they labor over the contrivances of base affairs—occupied with self-centered planning and heedless of divine decree.
In the daytime they strive with all their soul after worldly benefits, and in the night season their sole occupation is to gratify their carnal desires. By what law or standard could men be justified in cleaving to the denials of such petty-minded souls and in ignoring the faith of them that have renounced, for the sake of the good pleasure of God, their life and substance, their fame and renown, their reputation and honor?… With what love, what devotion, what exultation and holy rapture, they sacrificed their lives in the path of the All-Glorious! To the truth of this all witness. And yet, how can they belittle this Revelation? (edit) By day they strive for a livelihood, and by night for the adornment of the furnishings of their beds. Is it permissible in any law or religion that they should cling to the turning away of these few souls and, by it, deceive others from turning toward and affirming those souls who have sacrificed life and property, name and reputation, disgrace and renown, for the good pleasure of God? ... And with what yearning and love and affection and delight they freely offered up their lives in the path of the All-Glorious— as is clear and proven to all. Yet, despite this, how can they deem this Cause a trivial matter? (edit)

Hath any age witnessed such momentous happenings? If these companions be not the true strivers after God, who else could be called by this name? Have these companions been seekers after power or glory? Have they ever yearned for riches? Have they cherished any desire except the good pleasure of God? If these companions, with all their marvelous testimonies and wondrous works, be false, who then is worthy to claim for himself the truth? I swear by God! Their very deeds are a sufficient testimony, and an irrefutable proof unto all the peoples of the earth, were men to ponder in their hearts the mysteries of Divine Revelation. (edit) Has such a grave matter ever appeared in any age? And if these companions, striving in the path of God, are not warriors, then who will be? Were they seeking honor and power and wealth? Did they have any aim other than the good pleasure of the True One? And if all these companions, with these wondrous آثار and extraordinary deeds, are false, then who is worthy to claim the Truth? By God, their very action is for all those on earth a sufficient proof and a complete evidence. (edit)

“And they who act unjustly shall soon know what lot awaiteth them!”… (edit) If people would reflect on the mysteries of the matter… “And those who have done wrong will come to know to what place of return they will be returned.” … Now observe these truthful martyrs, whose truthfulness is attested by the explicit text of the Book: as you have seen, they have sacrificed their lives, their wealth, their wives and children, and all that they possessed, and have ascended to the loftiest chambers of Ridván. (edit)
Consider these martyrs of unquestionable sincerity, to whose truthfulness testifieth the explicit text of the Book, and all of whom, as thou hast witnessed, have sacrificed their life, their substance, their wives, their children, their all, and ascended unto the loftiest chambers of Paradise. Is it fair to reject the testimony of these detached and exalted beings to the truth of this preeminent and Glorious Revelation, and to regard as acceptable the denunciations which have been uttered against this resplendent Light by this faithless people, who for gold have forsaken their faith, and who for the sake of leadership have repudiated Him Who is the First Leader of all mankind? This, although their character is now revealed unto all people who have recognized them as those who will in no wise relinquish one jot or one tittle of their temporal authority for the sake of God’s holy Faith, how much less their life, their substance, and the like. (edit) The testimony of these exalted persons and detached souls in confirmation of this lofty, transcendent matter is not accepted; but the testimony of this group—who have abandoned their creed for gold, and who, in order to sit in the seat of honor, have from the very beginning avoided the Source—is admissible and accepted in refutation of this shining Light, even though all people have recognized them and have understood to this extent that they would not forgo even a particle of outward worldly credit in the path of the religion of God, let alone life and property and the like...
