ای برادر من شخص مجاهد که اراده نمود قدم طلب و سلوک در سبیل معرفت سلطان قدم گذارد باید در بدایت امر قلب را که محلّ ظهور و بروز تجلّی اسرار غیبی الهی است از جمیع غبارات تیرهٔ علوم اکتسابی و اشارات مظاهر شیطانی پاک و منزّه فرماید و صدر را که سریر ورود و جلوس محبّت محبوب ازلی است لطیف و نظیف نماید (edit)

When a true seeker determineth to take the step of search in the path leading unto the knowledge of the Ancient of Days, he must, before all else, cleanse his heart, which is the seat of the revelation of the inner mysteries of God, from the obscuring dust of all acquired knowledge, and the allusions of the embodiments of satanic fancy. He must purge his breast, which is the sanctuary of the abiding love of the Beloved, of every defilement, and sanctify his soul from all that pertaineth to water and clay, from all shadowy and ephemeral (edit) O my brother, the striving seeker who has resolved to set the foot of quest and wayfaring upon the path of the knowledge of the Sovereign must, at the beginning of the matter, cleanse and sanctify the heart—which is the place where the radiance and manifestation of the revelations of the divine unseen mysteries appear—from all the dark dusts of acquired sciences and the insinuations of satanic manifestations, and make the breast— which is the throne for the coming and sitting of the love of the Eternal Beloved—subtle and pure. talk. For the tongue is a smoldering fire, and excess of speech a deadly poison. Material fire consumeth the body, whereas the fire of the tongue devoureth both heart and soul. و غیبت را ضلالت شمرد و بآن عرصه هرگز قدم نگذارد زیرا غیبت سراج منیر قلب را خاموش نماید و حیات دل را بمیراند بقلیل قانع باشد و از طلب کثیر فارغ مصاحبت منقطعین را غنیمت شمارد و عزلت از متمسّکین و متکبّرین را نعمت شمرد (edit)

That seeker should, also, regard backbiting as grievous error, and keep himself aloof from its dominion, inasmuch as backbiting quencheth the light of the heart, and extinguisheth the life of the soul. He should be content with little, and be freed from all inordinate desire. He should treasure the companionship of them that have renounced the world, and regard avoidance of boastful and worldly people a precious (edit) And he deemed backbiting to be misguidance and would never set foot in that realm, for backbiting extinguishes the radiant lamp of the heart and kills the life of the heart. destitute. He should show kindness to animals, how much more unto his fellowman, to him who is endowed with the power of utterance. He should not hesitate to offer up his life for his Beloved, nor allow the censure of the people to turn him away from the Truth. He should not wish for others that which he doth not wish for himself, nor promise that which he doth not fulfill. With all his heart he should avoid fellowship with evildoers, and pray for the remission of their sins. ای بسا عاصی که در حین موت بجوهر ایمان موفّق شود و خمر بقا چشد و بملأ اعلی شتابد و بسا مطیع و مؤمن که در وقت ارتقای روح تقلیب شود و باسفل درکات نیران مقرّ یابد باری (edit)
be. How often hath a sinner attained, at the hour of death, to the essence of faith, and, quaffing the immortal draught, hath taken his flight unto the Concourse on high! And how often hath a devout believer, at the hour of his soul’s ascension, been so changed as to fall into the nethermost (edit) How often it happens that a sinner, at the moment of death, attains the essence of faith, tastes the wine of everlastingness, and hastens to the Supreme Concourse; and how often it happens that an obedient and believing person, at the time the soul ascends, is transformed and comes to rest in the lowest depths of fire. مقصود از جمیع این بیانات متقنه و اشارات محکمه آنست که سالک و طالب باید جز خدا را فنا داند و غیر معبود را معدوم شمرد و این شرایط از صفات عالین و سجیّهٔ روحانیّین است که در شرایط مجاهدین و مشی سالکین در مناهج علم الیقین ذکر یافت و بعد از تحقّق این مقامات برای سالک فارغ و طالب صادق لفظ مجاهد در بارهٔ او صادق میآید (edit)
fire! Our purpose in revealing these convincing and weighty utterances is to impress upon the seeker that he should regard all else beside God as transient, and count all things save Him, Who is the Object of all adoration, as utter nothingness. These are among the attributes of the exalted, and constitute the hallmark of the spiritually minded. They have already been mentioned in connection with the requirements of the wayfarers that tread the path of Positive Knowledge. When the detached wayfarer and sincere seeker hath fulfilled these essential conditions, then and only then can he be called a true (edit) The purport of all these firm statements and decisive allusions is that the wayfarer and seeker must regard all save God as perished and deem every object of worship other than Him as non-existent; and these conditions are among the lofty attributes and spiritual dispositions which were mentioned, in the conditions of those who strive and in the conduct of the wayfarers, in the paths of the knowledge of certitude. And after the realization of these stations, the term “striver” truly applies to the detached wayfarer and the sincere seeker. (edit)

و چون بعمل و الّذین جاهدوا فینا مؤیّد شد البتّه ببشارت لنهدینّهم سبلنا مستبشر خواهد شد و چون سراج طلب و مجاهده و ذوق و شوق و عشق و وله و جذب و حبّ در قلب روشن شد و نسیم محبّت از شطر احدیّه وزید ظلمت ضلالت شک و ریب زایل شود و انوار علم و یقین همهٔ ارکان وجود را احاطه نماید در آن حین بشیر معنوی ببشارت روحانی از مدینهٔ الهی چون صبح صادق طالع شود (edit)

Whensoever he hath fulfilled the conditions implied in the verse: “Whoso maketh efforts for Us,” he shall enjoy the blessings conferred by the words: “In Our Ways shall We assuredly guide him.” Only when the lamp of search, of earnest striving, of longing desire, of passionate devotion, of fervid love, of rapture, and ecstasy, is kindled within the seeker’s heart, and the breeze of His loving-kindness is wafted upon his soul, will the darkness of error be dispelled, the mists of doubts and misgivings be dissipated, and the lights of knowledge and certitude envelop his being. At that hour will the Mystic Herald, bearing the joyful tidings of the Spirit, shine forth from the City of God resplendent as the morn, and, through the trumpet-blast of knowledge, will awaken the heart, the soul, and the spirit from the slumber of (edit) And when he was strengthened by action and by those who strive in Us, he will assuredly rejoice in the glad tiding, “We shall surely guide them to Our paths.” And when the lamp of seeking and struggle and taste and longing and love and rapture and attraction and affection is lit in the heart, and the breeze of love blows from the quarter of divine oneness, the darkness of error, doubt, and suspicion will vanish, and the lights of knowledge and certainty will encompass all the pillars of existence. At that moment the spiritual herald, with the glad tidings of the spirit, will rise from the divine city like the true dawn. (edit)

و قلب و نفس و روح را بصور معرفت از نوم غفلت بیدار نماید و عنایات و تأییدات روح القدس صمدانی حیات تازهٔ جدید مبذول دارد بقسمی که خود را صاحب چشم جدید و گوش بدیع و قلب و فؤاد تازه می‌بیند (edit)

Then will the manifold favors and outpouring grace of the holy and everlasting Spirit confer such new life upon the seeker that he will find himself endowed with a new eye, a new ear, a new heart, and a new (edit) And may He awaken the heart, the soul, and the spirit from the slumber of heedlessness through the light of true knowledge, and bestow the gracious favors and confirmations of the Holy Spirit, the Eternal Self‑Sufficient One, as a fresh, new life—so that one sees oneself endowed with a new eye and a wondrous ear, and a renewed heart and inner being. و رجوع بآیات واضحهٔ آفاقیّه و خفیّات مستورهٔ انفسیّه مینماید و بعین ‌الله بدیعه در هر ذرّه بابی مفتوح مشاهده نماید برای وصول بمراتب عین الیقین و حقّ الیقین و نور الیقین و در جمیع اشیاء اسرار تجلّی وحدانیّه و آثار ظهور صمدانیّه ملاحظه (edit)
mind. He will contemplate the manifest signs of the universe, and will penetrate the hidden mysteries of the soul. Gazing with the eye of God, he will perceive within every atom a door that leadeth him to the stations of absolute certitude. He will discover in all things the mysteries of Divine Revelation, and the evidences of an everlasting (edit) And he turns to the clear signs in the horizons and the hidden, veiled mysteries within the souls, and with the eye of God he beholds, within every atom, an opened door, in order to attain the degrees of certainty of sight, certainty of truth, and certainty of light, and in all things to observe the mysteries of the revelation of oneness and the traces of the manifestation of the Self-Sufficient. کند قسم بخدا که اگر سالک سبیل هدی و طالب معارج تقی باین مقام بلند اعلی واصل گردد رائحهٔ حقّ را از فرسنگهای بعیده استنشاق نماید و صبح نورانی هدایت را از مشرق کلّ شیء ادراک (edit)
Manifestation. I swear by God! Were he that treadeth the path of guidance and seeketh to scale the heights of righteousness to attain unto this glorious and exalted station, he would inhale, at a distance of a thousand leagues, the fragrance of God, and would perceive the resplendent morn of a Divine guidance rising above the Dayspring of all (edit) I swear by God that if the wayfarer on the path of guidance and the seeker of the ascents of piety attains this lofty, exalted station, he will inhale the fragrance of Truth from far-off leagues and perceive the radiant dawn of guidance from the east of all things. کند و هر ذرّه و هر شیء او را دلالت بر محبوب و مطلوب نماید و چنان ممیّز شود که حقّ را از باطل چون شمس از ظلّ فرق گذارد مثلاً اگر نسیم حقّ از مشرق ابداع وزد و او در مغرب اختراع باشد البتّه استشمام کند (edit)
things. Each and every thing, however small, would be to him a revelation, leading him to his Beloved, the Object of his quest. So great shall be the discernment of this seeker that he will discriminate between truth and falsehood, even as he doth distinguish the sun from shadow. If in the uttermost corners of the East the sweet savors of God be wafted, he will assuredly recognize and inhale their fragrance, even though he be dwelling in the uttermost ends of the (edit) and let every atom and every thing point him to the Beloved and the Desired, and let him become so discerning that he can distinguish truth from falsehood as the sun from shadow. For example, if the breeze of Truth blows from the East of creation and he is in the West of invention, he will certainly catch its scent. (edit)

و همچنین جمیع آثار حقّ را از کلمات بدیعه و اعمال منیعه و افعال لمیعه از افعال و اعمال و آثار ماسوی امتیاز دهد چنانچه اهل لؤلؤ لؤلؤ را از حجر و انسان ربیع را از خریف و حرارت را از برودت و دماغ جان چون از زکام کون و امکان پاک (edit)
West. He will, likewise, clearly distinguish all the signs of God — His wondrous utterances, His great works, and mighty deeds — from the doings, the words and ways of men, even as the jeweler who knoweth the gem from the stone, or the man who distinguisheth the spring from autumn, and heat from cold. When the channel of the human soul is cleansed of all worldly and impeding attachments, it will unfailingly perceive the breath of the Beloved across immeasurable distances, and will, led by its perfume, attain and enter the City of (edit) And also may he distinguish all the works of Truth—rare words, lofty deeds, and shining acts—from the acts, deeds, and آثار of all else, just as those skilled with pearls distinguish the pearl from stone, and a person distinguishes spring from autumn, warmth from coldness, and the mind and soul, once cleansed, from the catarrh of the world of creation and possibility. Certitude. Therein he will discern the wonders of His ancient Wisdom, and will perceive all the hidden teachings from the rustling leaves of the Tree that flourisheth in that (edit) So that he may surely find the fragrance of the Beloved from distant abodes, and through the effect of that fragrance, enter the Egypt of certitude in the presence of the All-Bountiful, and behold the wonders of the wisdom of the Most Glorious in that spiritual city. کند و جمیع علوم مکنونه را از اطوار ورقهٔ شجرهٔ آن مدینه استماع نماید و از تراب آن مدینه تسبیح و تقدیس ربّ الأرباب بگوش ظاهر و باطن شنود و اسرار رجوع و ایاب را بچشم سر ملاحظه فرماید چه ذکر نمایم از آثار و علامات و ظهورات و تجلّیات که بامر سلطان اسماء و صفات در آن مدینه مقدّر (edit)
City. With both his inner and outer ear, he will hear from its dust the hymns of glory and praise ascending unto the Lord of Lords, and with his inner eye will he discover the mysteries of “return” and “revival.” How unspeakably glorious are the signs, the tokens, the revelations, and splendors which He, Who is the King of Names and Attributes, hath destined for that (edit) and hear all the hidden sciences from the various states of the leaf of the tree of that city, and from the dust of that city hear with the outward and inward ear the glorification and sanctification of the Lord of lords, and behold with the eye of the head the mysteries of return and homecoming. What shall I mention of the آثار, signs, manifestations, and revelations that, by the command of the Sovereign of Names and Attributes, are ordained in that city? (edit)

شده بی‌آب رفع عطش نماید و بی‌نار حرارت محبّة الله بیفزاید در هر گیاهی حکمت بالغهٔ معنوی مستور است و بر شاخسار هر گل هزار بلبل ناطقه در جذب و شور از لاله‌های بدیعش سرّ نار موسوی ظاهر و از نفحات قدسیّه‌اش نفخهٔ روح القدس عیسوی باهر بی‌ذهب غنا بخشد و بی‌فنا بقا عطا (edit)
City! The attainment unto this City quencheth thirst without water, and kindleth the love of God without fire. Within every blade of grass are enshrined the mysteries of an inscrutable Wisdom, and upon every rosebush a myriad nightingales pour out, in blissful rapture, their melody. Its wondrous tulips unfold the mystery of the undying Fire in the Burning Bush, and its sweet savors of holiness breathe the perfume of the Messianic Spirit. It bestoweth wealth without gold, and conferreth immortality without (edit) It would quench thirst though without water, and, though without fire, increase the heat of the love of God. In every plant a consummate spiritual wisdom is hidden, and on the branch of every flower a thousand eloquent nightingales are in rapture and longing. From its wondrous tulips the secret of Moses’ fire is made manifest, and from its holy breaths the breath of the Holy Spirit of Jesus shines forth. Without gold it bestows riches, and without perishing it grants abidingness. (edit)

فرماید در هر ورقش نعیمی مکنون و در هر غرفه‌اش صد‌هزار حکمت مخزون و مجاهدین فی‌‌الله بعد از انقطاع از ماسوی چنان بآن مدینه انس گیرند که آنی از آن منفکّ (edit)
death. In each one of its leaves ineffable delights are treasured, and within every chamber unnumbered mysteries lie hidden. They that valiantly labor in quest of God, will, when once they have renounced all else but Him, be so attached and wedded unto that City, that a moment’s separation from it would to them be (edit) In every leaf of it a blessing is concealed, and in every chamber of it a hundred thousand wisdoms are stored; and the strivers in the path of God, after severing ties with all else, become so intimately familiar with that city that they are not separated from it for even an instant. Once in about a thousand years shall this City be renewed and (edit) So that they may hear the conclusive proofs from the hyacinth of that gathering and derive the clear evidences from the beauty of the rose and the song of the nightingale, and that this city be renewed and adorned at the beginning of its thousandth year, whether more or less.
