– CXVIII – Lay not aside the fear of God, O kings of the earth, and beware that ye transgress not the bounds which the Almighty hath fixed. Observe the injunctions laid upon you in His Book, and take good heed not to overstep their limits. Be vigilant, that ye may not do injustice to anyone, be it to the extent of a grain of mustard seed. Tread ye the path of justice, for this, verily, is the straight path. (edit) | Fear God, O company of kings, and do not deprive yourselves of this greatest bounty. Cast away what is in your hands; hold fast to the cord of God, the Most High, the Almighty, and turn your hearts toward the Countenance of God. Then abandon what your passions command you, and do not be among the losers. Say, O servant, and recount to them the tidings of ‘Alí, when he came to them with the truth, and with him a Book, Mighty and Wise, and in his hands a proof from God, His testimony and evidences of a holy, noble grace. And you, O kings, did not remember the remembrance of God in His days, nor were you guided by the lights that appeared and shone forth from the horizon of a luminous heaven. (edit) |

Compose your differences, and reduce your armaments, that the burden of your expenditures may be lightened, and that your minds and hearts may be tranquillized. (edit) | And you did not investigate his matter after what had happened; this is better for you than all that the sun rises upon, if you are of those who know. And you were heedless of that until the scholars of the foreigners issued a legal ruling against him and killed him unjustly—those wrongdoers. And his spirit ascended to God, and the eyes of the people of Paradise wept because of this injustice, then the angels brought near. Beware lest you be heedless again after you were heedless before; so return to God, your Creator, and do not be among the heedless. Say: The sun of guardianship has risen, the Point of knowledge and wisdom has been made distinct, and the proof of God, the Mighty, the Wise, has appeared. (edit) |
|
Heal the dissensions that divide you, and ye will no longer be in need of any armaments except what the protection of your cities and territories demandeth. (edit) | Say: The moon of everlastingness has already appeared at the pole of heaven, and from it the Concourse on High has been illumined. The Countenance has been revealed from behind the veils, and from it all who are in the heavens and the earths have been enlightened; yet you have not turned toward Him for whom you were created, O company of rulers. If you follow my word, then hear it with your hearts and be not of those who turn away; for your glory is not in your sovereignty, but in your nearness to God and your obedience to His command in what has been sent down upon the holy tablets of the Preserved. (edit) |

Fear ye God, and take heed not to outstrip the bounds of moderation, and be numbered among the extravagant. (edit) | Even if one of you were to rule over the whole earth and everything in it and upon it—its sea and land, its mountains and plains—none of that would be mentioned before God as something that benefits him, if you are among those who know. Know that the honor of the servant lies in his nearness to God; apart from that, nothing will ever benefit him, even if he were to rule over all creation altogether. Say: the breezes of God have blown upon you from the direction of Paradise, yet you are heedless of them and have been among the heedless. (edit) |

We have learned that you are increasing your outlay every year, and are laying the burden thereof on your subjects. (edit) | Guidance has come to you from God, yet you did not seek guidance by it and were among those who turned away. The lamp of God has shone in the niche of the matter, yet you did not take light from it, nor did you draw near to it, and you lay upon the bed of heedlessness among those who sleep. So rise through the man of uprightness and make up for what has passed you by; then turn to the court of holiness on the shore of a mighty sea, so that there may be revealed to you the pearls of knowledge and wisdom that God has stored in the shell of a luminous breast. This is the best counsel for you, so make it a provision for yourselves, that you may be among the rightly guided. (edit) |

This, verily, is more than they can bear, and is a grievous injustice. (edit) | Beware lest you prevent from your hearts the breath of God by which the hearts of those who turn to Him are made to live. So listen to what We have counselled you in this Tablet, that God may hear from you and open before your faces the gates of mercy; verily He is the All-Merciful, the Most Merciful. Fear God, O kings, and do not transgress the bounds of God; then follow what you have been commanded in the Book and be not of those who overstep. Beware lest you wrong anyone by even the weight of a mustard seed, and walk in the path of justice; verily it is a straight path. Then set right what is between you, and reduce your armies, that your expenditures may be less and you may be among those at ease. (edit) |

Decide justly between men, and be ye the emblems of justice amongst them. This, if ye judge fairly, is the thing that behooveth you, and beseemeth your station. (edit) | If you would put an end to the اختلاف among yourselves, you would not need large armies except to the extent with which you guard your countries and kingdoms. Fear God and do not be excessive in anything, and do not be among the extravagant. We have learned that you increase your expenditures every day and place them upon the subjects, and this is beyond their capacity; indeed, this is a great injustice. Be just, O kings, among the people, and be manifestations of justice on earth—this is what is fitting and befitting of your station, if you are among the fair-minded. (edit) |
|
Beware not to deal unjustly with anyone that appealeth to you, and entereth beneath your shadow. (edit) | Beware lest you wrong those who have emigrated to you and entered under your protection. Fear God and be among the God-fearing. Do not feel secure in your power, your armies, and your treasuries; rather, feel secure in God, your Creator, then seek His help in your affairs. Victory comes only from Him; He grants victory to whom He wills with the hosts of the heavens and the earth. Then know that the poor are God’s trusts among you; beware lest you betray His trusts, wrong them, or be among the treacherous. (edit) |
|
Walk ye in the fear of God, and be ye of them that lead a godly life. (edit) | You will be questioned about his trustworthiness on the day when the balance of justice is set up, when every rightful claimant is given his due, and when all deeds are weighed—those of every rich and poor person. If you do not take counsel from what We have advised you in this book, in a clear, wondrous tongue, punishment will seize you from every side, and God will come to you with His justice, when you will not be able to stand before Him and will surely be among the helpless. So have mercy on yourselves and on the souls of the servants, then judge between them by what God has decreed in an impregnable, holy Tablet, wherein He has ordained the measures of all things, set forth everything in detail, and made it an admonition and a reminder for His certain servants. (edit) |
|
Rest not on your power, your armies, and treasures. Put your whole trust and confidence in God, Who hath created you, and seek ye His help in all your affairs. (edit) | Then gain insight into our cause and ascertain what has come to us; then judge between us and our enemies with justice, and be among the just. And if you do not restrain the oppressor from his oppression and do not take the right of the wronged, then in what do you take pride among the servants and be among the boastful? Is your pride that you eat and drink and that adornments accumulate in your treasuries, or that you adorn yourselves with red and yellow stones, or with precious white pearls? Even if pride were in these perishing things, then the dust ought to boast over you, for it offers and spends upon you all of that from One Powerful and All-Determining. God has placed all of that in its belly and brings it forth for you of His bounty; so look into your state and what you take pride in, if you are of those who observe. (edit) |
(edit)

Succor cometh from Him alone. He succoreth whom He will with the hosts of the heavens and of the earth. Know ye that the poor are the trust of God in your midst. Watch that ye betray not His trust, that ye deal not unjustly with them and that ye walk not in the ways of the treacherous. Ye will most certainly be called upon to answer for His trust on the day when the Balance of Justice shall be set, the day when unto every one shall be rendered his due, when the doings of all men, be they rich or poor, shall be weighed. If ye pay no heed unto the counsels which, in peerless and unequivocal language, We have revealed in this Tablet, Divine chastisement shall assail you from every direction, and the sentence of His justice shall be pronounced against you. On that day ye shall have no power to resist Him, and shall recognize your own impotence. Have mercy on yourselves and on those beneath you. Judge ye between them according to the precepts prescribed by God in His most holy and exalted Tablet, a Tablet wherein He hath assigned to each and every thing its settled measure, in which He hath given, with distinctness, an explanation of all things, and which is in itself a monition unto them that believe in Him. Examine Our Cause, inquire into the things that have befallen Us, and decide justly between Us and Our enemies, and be ye of them that act equitably towards their neighbor. If ye stay not the hand of the oppressor, if ye fail to safeguard the rights of the downtrodden, what right have ye then to vaunt yourselves among men? What is it of which ye can rightly boast? Is it on your food and your drink that ye pride yourselves, on the riches ye lay up in your treasuries, on the diversity and the cost of the ornaments with which ye deck yourselves? If true glory were to consist in the possession of such perishable things, then the earth on which ye walk must needs vaunt itself over you, because it supplieth you, and bestoweth upon you, these very things, by the decree of the Almighty. In its bowels are contained, according to what God hath ordained, all that ye possess. From it, as a sign of His mercy, ye derive your riches. Behold then your state, the thing in which ye glory! Would that ye could perceive it! Nay! By Him Who holdeth in His grasp the kingdom of the entire creation! Nowhere doth your true and abiding glory reside except in your firm adherence unto the precepts of God, your wholehearted observance of His laws, your resolution to see that they do not remain unenforced, and to pursue steadfastly the right course. (edit) | No, by Him in Whose grasp lies the dominion of all that is possible, your pride lies only in following God’s ways within yourselves; do not leave God’s ordinances among you forsaken, and be among the rightly guided...
