People’s heedlessness has reached such a station that they have not become, nor do they become, aware of the sinking of the city, the blowing up of the mountain, and the rending of the earth. The allusions and signs are manifest in the books, and at every moment the cry is raised; yet, notwithstanding this, all are stupefied by the wine of heedlessness, except whom God wills. Each day the earth is seen afflicted with a new calamity, and it increases moment by moment. From the time of the revelation of the Sūrah of the Chief until this day, neither has the earth attained calm, nor have the people been adorned with tranquillity.
