The true unifier today is one who regards the Truth as sanctified above phantoms and likenesses, not one who deems likenesses and phantoms to be the Truth. For example, consider: from a maker a workmanship appears, and from a painter a design. Now if it be said that this workmanship and design are the very essence of the maker and the painter, this is a lie, by the Lord of the Throne and the dust; rather, they indicate the manifestation of the perfections of the maker and the painter. O perishing shaykh, the meaning of annihilation from self and subsistence in God is that every soul should behold itself, beside the will of the Truth, as annihilated and sheer nothingness.
