Let him show consideration even for an animal—how much more, then, for a human being and for people of eloquence; let him not begrudge his very life to his beloved; let him not, out of fear of people’s reproach, refrain from the truth; let him not desire for others what he does not desire for himself; let him not say what he will not fulfill; let him, even at the height of power, pardon those who err and seek forgiveness; let him draw the pen of pardon over sinners; and let him not look with contempt, for a good end is unknown.
