And it is also said: "And they say: 'Are we to leave our gods for a mad poet?'." The meaning of this verse is clear. Notice what they said after the revelation of the verses: are we abandoning our gods for a mad poet? They referred to the Prophet as a poet and mocked the divine verses, saying: "These are tales of the ancients," meaning that these were words spoken in the past and Muhammad is just rearranging them, claiming they are from God.
